SUMMARY:VE Day 80th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:On 8 May 2025\, we mark the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day\, with the peoples\, families and communities of our great nation coming together to unite and celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of World War II in Europe that so many millions paid the ultimate sacrifice to achieve it. \nVE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today\, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since. \nThere is a mix of sadness as we remember those who gave their lives during the conflict and joy as we celebrate the end of the war. \nWythall Community Association are proud to be the hosts of one the thousand beacons spread across our countryside\, which we will be lighting\, alongside hundreds of lamp lights of peace to shine across the country. \nThe full program of events at the Park on Thursday are as follows: \nAt 4pm\, Bounce and Ride\, who proved such a hit last summer\, will be setting up their bouncy castles and other fun childrens’ entertainment\, and Dobson’s Fair are providing a couple of rides! \n6pm\, Wythall Community Club opens. We have a Temporary Event Notice\, so it is open to all\, and thanks to the generous support of Alice Batham\, your first chance to try Batham’s Best Bitter in Wythall! As well as\, of course\, all the other fine beers\, ciders\, wines and spirits! \nTwisted Kitchen will also be on site with their fabulous wood-fired pizzas and burgers from Dobsons. \n8pm sees the return of the Cheswick Green Ukulele Orchestra to the Britannia Room with a range of hits from the 40’s and on. \nBeer\, pizza and singalong songs! Can it get any better? \nAt 9pm we have the start of the celebratory part of the event. Thanks to Bromsgrove District Council\, we have fireworks from Wythall’s award winning team. \nWhen the smoke has cleared\, Marcus Pagnum from St Mary’s Church will read the Exhortation and Kohima\, assisted by Sam Hewitt from Kings Norton Marching Band with the Last Post and Reveille\, and Albert Bishop raising the Royal British Legion Standard. \nThen at 9:30pm\, Craig Smith\, Royal Navy veteran\, will temporarily cease pizza-cooking duties\, and light the beacon of hope. \nThen it is back to the Community Club for more music from the CGUO! And more beer and pizza? \nThe car parks will be free from 3pm to midnight.

DESCRIPTION:The D Day 80th Anniversary Celebration and Family Day at Wythall Park on Sunday June the 9th (from midday to midnight!) promises to be a fabulous day. \nLots and lots going on\, including the following in Park Hall (unless otherwise stated): \n\n\n\n\n\n2.00pm – Wythall Community Choir (Britannia Room)\n2.00pm Fun in The Park – games\, craft\, chat and fun for children of all ages\n4.00pm – Cheswick Green Ukulele Orchestra\n5.00pm – The Kings Norton Youth Marching Band (Wythall Park)\n5.30pm – Cheswick Green Ukulele Orchestra\n7.00pm – The Boogaloo Babes\n7.45pm – Salsa demonstration and free class\n8.30pm – The Boogaloo Babes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso available:\n\nDobson’s Fair\nExhibitions from Wythall History Society and\nWythall Parish Council (Britannia Room)\nVintage Buses from Wythall Transport Museum\nTea and Cakes from Pearls of Wythall WI\n\n\n\n\n\n… and finishing with one of our celebrated fireworks displays (9:30pm)! \nWythall Transport Museum will have vintage buses in the car park\, Wythall History Society and Wythall Parish Council both have exhibitions in the Britannia Room\, plus lots of food and craft stalls on the Park. And bars in Park Hall (from 3.30pm) and The Community Club (from noon). \nWe also have Dobson’s fair to keep everyone entertained in between times! \nWe need volunteers (you must be over 18 years of age) to help marshal the event from noon (set up) through to 10pm (firework finish). You WILL NOT be security\, you are just there to help visitors find their way around the Park\, to ensure they don’t miss out on anything! Sign up for any shifts you can do\, and those you can do ‘if pushed’. DESCRIPTION:On the actual 80th anniversary of D-Day (6th June)\, at 9:15pm\, as part of the national memorial\, we are lighting the beacon on the mound in the park. \nWe are honoured to have Wythall and Bletchley Park legend Betty Webb actually lighting it\, with the Rev Manda Featherstone\, from St Mary’s\, whom many of you will know from the annual Remembrance Day service\, reading the tribute to the fallen. \nThe Tribute\nLet us remember those who gave their lives at\nhome and abroad during the D-Day landings\,\nwhose sacrifice enables us all to enjoy the\npeace and freedom we have today. \nLet us remember those who came home\nwounded\, physically and mentally\, and the\nfriends and family who cared for them. \nLet us remember those who returned to restore\ntheir relationships and rebuild their working\nlives after years of conflict and turmoil. \nLet us remember the families that lost husbands\,\nwives\, sons\, daughters and sweethearts. \nLet us remember the servicemen and women\nand merchant seafarers of all nationalities –\nfrom all countries – who fought\, suffered and\ndied during the D-Day landings and six years\nof war. \nLet us all remember those in the Royal Navy\,\nArmy\, Royal Air Force\, Merchant Navy\, and our\nAllies – the brave people who kept us safe on\nthe home front and abroad and those in\nreserved occupations during the difficult time of war. \nLet us remember the brave doctors and nurses who\ncared for the wounded\, the men and women who\ntoiled in the fields\, the coal mines\, the factories\nand the air raid wardens\, police officers\, firemen\,\nambulance drivers and the young people of the Scouts\nand Guides who all played such a vital role in the war. \nStandard Bearer – Albert Bishop \nBugler – Sam Hewitt from Kings Norton Youth Marching Band
