SUMMARY:Shirley And Wythall Chess Club
DESCRIPTION:Shirley & Wythall Chess Club is a friendly group of keen chess players. \nThe club has more than 40 members\, and competes in more than 20 leagues and cups every season. We field 5 teams in the Birmingham & District Chess League (BDCL)\, 4 teams in the Leamington & District Chess League (LDCL)\, hold club tournaments and host events throughout the year.  Home matches take place on Thursdays and Mondays. \nNewcomers of any ability\, age and gender are welcome to come and have a friendly game\, discuss their needs and chess aspirations. \nWe meet every Thursday from 7.30pm at Wythall House\, 52 Silver Street\, Wythall\, B47 6LZ \nShould you decide to become a member\, the annual subscription fee is as follows: \n\n\n\n\n\n£30 for adults\n£10 for under 18s\n\n\n\n\n\nThis does not include Bronze ECF membership (required in order to play league games).

SUMMARY:80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:On the actual 80th anniversary of D-Day (6th June)\, at 9:15pm\, as part of the national memorial\, we are lighting the beacon on the mound in the park. \nWe are honoured to have Wythall and Bletchley Park legend Betty Webb actually lighting it\, with the Rev Manda Featherstone\, from St Mary’s\, whom many of you will know from the annual Remembrance Day service\, reading the tribute to the fallen. \nThe Tribute\nLet us remember those who gave their lives at\nhome and abroad during the D-Day landings\,\nwhose sacrifice enables us all to enjoy the\npeace and freedom we have today. \nLet us remember those who came home\nwounded\, physically and mentally\, and the\nfriends and family who cared for them. \nLet us remember those who returned to restore\ntheir relationships and rebuild their working\nlives after years of conflict and turmoil. \nLet us remember the families that lost husbands\,\nwives\, sons\, daughters and sweethearts. \nLet us remember the servicemen and women\nand merchant seafarers of all nationalities –\nfrom all countries – who fought\, suffered and\ndied during the D-Day landings and six years\nof war. \nLet us all remember those in the Royal Navy\,\nArmy\, Royal Air Force\, Merchant Navy\, and our\nAllies – the brave people who kept us safe on\nthe home front and abroad and those in\nreserved occupations during the difficult time of war. \nLet us remember the brave doctors and nurses who\ncared for the wounded\, the men and women who\ntoiled in the fields\, the coal mines\, the factories\nand the air raid wardens\, police officers\, firemen\,\nambulance drivers and the young people of the Scouts\nand Guides who all played such a vital role in the war. \nStandard Bearer – Albert Bishop \nBugler – Sam Hewitt from Kings Norton Youth Marching Band
